Why I had a "Yes Day," for my Kids

After having a Yeah Day for my kids, I was completely shocked at what they requested. I learned a huge lesson every bit a mom too.

My husband looked at me like I was crazy.

"A yes day, for the kids, Jessica? Why would yous practice that to yourself?"

"I desire to see if I tin do it, and see how spoiled the kids really are." 🙂

Why I Had a "Yes Solar day," for my Kids

A while back, I had heard of another mom having a "Yes Day," for her kids, and I thought it was the coolest thing. I practise remember thinking:

Holy cow. A whole day where my kids go told "yes," to everything that they ask for. Is that possible? I mean, what if they ask to wing to California, or want to practice something really nasty, similar play in a sewer treatment plant?

So I thought experimenting with a "Yep Day," while my kids are toddlers would reduce the take a chance of their creativity to expand beyond reality. I was correct. I took along my camera for the adventure, to capture the moments, and I'll admit… I've looked at them a million times, reflecting on the 24-hour interval that we had.

Honestly… it went Style meliorate than I expected, for 2 reasons.

i. My kids didn't ask for anything extravagant. Everything they asked for was WAY less than what I would imagine, if I tried to read their minds and surprise them with something special. Their level of "special," and my level of "special," were completely indifferent.

two. This "Yes Twenty-four hour period," was more of an eye opening experience for me, their mom, than I feel that it was a "Let's encounter what nosotros can go away with," mean solar day for my kiddos. Allow me show yous our day, and you'll understand why:

    "Yes Day"

I hadn't told my kiddos that we were going to take a "Yes Solar day."

I wanted to see first what it was like for them to go on about their day, without knowing I would say "yes," to everything they asked for. (Now go on in heed, my youngest is i, so he wouldn't quite sympathise the whole concept anyway. But believe me, he asks for things in his own way ALL day long, so this trivial experiment would piece of work just fine with him.)  Somewhen, about half way through the day, I told them it was a "yes," day… to encounter if I would go a unlike response.

Beginning "yeah."

My three year sometime asked to play on the iPad when he crawled out of bed. Typically I'll say to this asking, "Not right at present. Nosotros can find other things to play with right now." But today, "Yes."

Not minutes after the iPad turned on, my ane year old decided to make his debut that day, and holler at mommy to come up become 'em. (Pardon the fuzziness. It was dark in there.)  😉

Wake-Upward Time

I don't know about your family, just we e'er take to have a petty "wake-up," session on our couch, until everyone fully wakes upwardly, to begin the day. This usually involves cuddling, brotherly bonding time (that but happens if they're half asleep) sitting on mommy's lap.

Afterwards he had his fill with the iPad, my 3 yr old requested to lookout his "Bible Stories," movie. Be yet my heart. So… a little movie action took place, with a side of carrot-orange juice. Seriously… I'm loving "Yes Solar day," so far, and I'm thinking, "I tin exercise this."

Breakfast Outdoors

Lucky us, it was a beautiful day, and the tots decided to play on the back porch later breakfast. (In which they ate exactly what they requested, by the way. Waffle and yogurt for my 3 year old. Oatmeal for the youngin.)

"Mom, can we become to the grocery store?" "You bet!"

(Adept thing also, because nosotros needed some serious groceries.)

Grocery Trip

My iii twelvemonth old LOVES pushing his own cart in the store, which makes my life as a mom a little easier to exercise some shopping. Plus, I get THAT much more room to pile in some groceries, when my cart gets too full. 😉

Whew… that was a shut one. The oldest spotted that new superhero cereal, idea it was the coolest thing ever… but didn't ask for it.

My youngest… spotted the cookies in the bakery, AND asked for it. Not so lucky. But hey, information technology kept him settled plenty to let me finish my shopping.

When leaving the grocery store, it was requested that we get to the restaurant where they make striped grilled cheeses. (In other words, Panera Bread where they make their grilled cheese sandwiches in a panini machine, that creates the "burnt" lines on the staff of life.)

"You bet!" And then off to the restaurant drive thru we went, and grabbed our lunch, and headed abode for a picnic tiffin on the back porch. Photographic camera in manus, only no iphone, no nothing for mom. Simply lunch with my boys.

Nap + Play Time

After that "filling," grilled cheese dejeuner, information technology was time to play. Requested? Play on the porch some more with bubbles and superheros.

It was at this point, that I told my oldest that it was a "yeah solar day." He looked at me and said, "Then I tin ask for annihilation, and you'll say "yes?"

"Yes."

His eyes TOTALLY lit up.

Then… nap fourth dimension. Yes, my youngest really does request nap time. Don't believe me? Enquire anyone I know. Some days, he'll grab you past the manus, lead you to his room and point at his crib; arms upwardly, and grunt. It'southward time for nap.

While the youngest napped, my oldest and I spent some quality time together. Nosotros played with his new purchase from the grocery store… Quondam Valentine'southward Day cards on the clearance aisle for .19 cents. Really? Yep, I got away piece of cake with that 1.

The Great Outdoors

After nap,

"Mom, can we play outside?"

"Absolutely!"

They LOVE playing outside, and didn't even inquire to get to the park ONCE. I was completely shocked. I thought for sure on "Aye Day," I'd be packing the boys up and headed to the park. Just our front yard was good enough.

Within Play

After what seemed like HOURS, the boys were finally ready to go back within. Possibly I didn't take anything to drink out with u.s., in hopes that after hours, they'd be ready to go back inside to go a snack and a beverage. That worked. 😉

So to the playroom we went. Mommy finally got a gamble to sit downwardly and relax. Why I had a "Yes Day," for my kids. https://fantabulosity.com

Pizza for Dinner

Dinner Asking: Pizza.

"Okie Dokie. Pizza it is!"

Discover my youngest likes to eat his pizza with ane arm out of his shirt. Non sure of the reasoning behind that, but I had to say "yes." 😉

This concluded our photo session of our "yeah day." Nosotros did end up having baths after dinner, in which I'll spare you lot of the naked toddler bodies. Merely they Dear bathroom time, and afterward the wild and messy day that nosotros had, mommy loved the idea of bath time for them likewise.

Why I Had a Aye Day for my Kids:

(and what I learned)

Y'all may be telling yourself, "Ok, afterwards seeing those photos, I never saw anything CRAZY." Y'all're correct. I didn't either. It looked like a typical solar day. A special mean solar day… just a typical mean solar day.

Only, it was a "yes day." They could have gotten (nearly) anything they wanted. Merely yous know what? I think they got everything they wanted.

How so? My kids are completely blessed. They're healthy, have full bellies every night before bed, have a roof over their caput while they sleep at dark, a huge family that loves them, and a play room that looks similar toys r us threw up in.

What would I have tried to do for them if it was a "Mom'southward Day to Spoil?"

  • I would accept took them to breakfast and ordered the biggest pancakes.
  • Went to the store and bought them both a new expensive toy, 1 that they've wanted for a long fourth dimension.
  • Took them to lunch, at some place where they could play on an indoor playground while they ate
  • Finished off filling our bellies with going to the nearest ice foam shack
  • Took them to the park
  • Took them out to dinner for pizza at a eating place with an arcade, to play their little hearts out
  • Finished off the solar day with playing outside until the dominicus went downwards, and they passed out from exhaustion.

At present don't go me incorrect. Would they dearest to practice those things? Oh I'yard SURE!

Only reality is, I allow them ask me for anything they wanted, and this was the consequence.

Simple…undivided Time with Mom

Sometimes, I think we as moms, call up we take to be improvident to brand our kids days exceptional. I think we're wrong moms. It won't be that expensive toy that you bought your kiddo, that he'll call up when he's eighteen, looking dorsum at great memories of his childhood. It will be those moments that we spent with them as moms, (and dads) giving them that undivided, simple attention.

Some funnies and (almost) "NO" moments of our day?

  • One year one-time pulled food out of his oral fissure and tried to feed information technology to me. GROSS! My reply: "Yum yum yum," and just turned my caput. But I didn't say "No!"
  • "Mom, can we pick daddy up and have lunch with him?" "Oh I'thou sorry honey, but Daddy is in a meeting far away today, so he won't be able to bring together usa for tiffin." But I didn't say "No."
  • 1 year old gets close to the road while playing. Ok… I broke the rule on this one. I screamed "NO!" Why? Because I wanted to become his attending, and his safety was not considered an experiment.

What am I well-nigh surprised about from "Yeah Day?"

I really don't say, "No," that often. Really. When I became a parent, I told myself that, the word "no," would be very rare in my vocabulary. Why? Honestly, I think I read a blog post one time about it. Go figure. But I wanted the discussion, "NO," to exist serious. For example, "NO!!!" would catch my child's attention if they got close to the road, or in any case of danger. If I'm constantly maxim "NO," at dwelling, they may become immune to the word and tone, and would not accept the effect that it should, when information technology comes time.

And so what are the other options of not saying "no?"

  • Not right now
  • Mayhap afterward
  • We'll run across
  • I don't know if that's the best thing to do right now
  • Oh I'd love to, but…

There are TONS of means to say "no," without saying "yep."

Give a "Yes Solar day," a try. You may just be as surprised as I was.
