Are Male or Female Dogs Better for Families

Did y'all know that nearly experts "in the dog world" use the word dog for male dogs, and bitch for female person dogs?

Of course I exercise now.... just many years ago, when I was simply a teenager, a kennel manager instructed me to "Practice the dogs for 10 minutes each."

Now there were eighteen dogs in the building, so this chore took a few hours. Only they and I enjoyed our niggling outings together.

Toward the finish, I happened to walk by the kennel manager with a piffling sweetheart named Millie. Imagine my confusion when he shouted, "I told you lot to practise the DOGS!!! Millie is a BITCH!!"

And so.... to eliminate any confusion with terms... should yous get a boy dog or a girl dog ?

symbol for male dogsSpeaking very generally about male dogs...

Males tend to be more than stable in mood than females – less decumbent to emotional swings. An elderly gentleman said of his big male person dog, "He's every bit reliable as rain in Seattle, he is. Summertime or winter, morning or nighttime, Ringo is every bit dependable as ever."

Many male dogs are bolder and more aggressive than females. For example, most police and war machine dogs are males.

And even so in some breeds, it'southward the female who tends to be a bit "sharper" and more than ambitious, while the males are described as "affectionate goofballs" or "big ol' softies."

X symbolMale dogs have genitals that are piece of cake to see, which makes some owners feel self-conscious. When you roll them over to rub their belly, there's "something in the way." Male person dogs may become aroused and/or lick their individual parts. Again, some owners observe this embarrassing, especially when Grandma happens to be visiting.

A male domestic dog is either unneutered (likewise chosen intact) or neutered (also chosen castrated or de-sexed).

Neutering/castration is surgery that removes the testicles from the scrotum, so the dog tin't breed or sire puppies.

See my advice on the pros and cons of neutering a male canis familiaris.

Female person dogs are more than prone to mood swings. They tin exist sweet and loving when they're happy – just a scrap on the sulky side when they actually, actually don't like something.

At present mind you, I'yard a proud member of the fairer sex myself. Simply I must acknowledge that female person dogs are experts at giving you That Muddied Await when something isn't to their liking.

Female dogs are oftentimes less physical than males, less "in your face up" than male dogs. Females are affectionate, absolutely, but often on their own terms. They may request petting, then assert their independence past walking away when they've had enough.

Female dogs are opinionated and ofttimes manipulative. If they don't want to exercise something, they may endeavour to work their charming wiles with you. If that doesn't piece of work, they may get passively resistant or slink around with their tail down and ears back. Or give you i of those patented "looks." Some owners find this exasperating, while others notice it amusing.

A female is either unneutered (likewise called intact) or neutered (also called spayed or de-sexed).

Neutering/spaying means surgically removing the uterus and ovaries so the female can't accept oestrus periods or become pregnant.

Meet my advice on the pros and cons of spaying a female dog.

Which sex is meliorate for YOU?

When you lot start looking for a puppy, you'll notice many breeders recommending males as improve pets.

Well, not so fast. There's a practical reason for this – breeders want to keep more than females (for breeding) than males, so they e'er accept more than male puppies to sell. It'south in the breeder's best interest to persuade pet buyers that males brand ameliorate pets.

At that place are some Special Circumstances that might bespeak yous in the direction of one sex or the other.

Consider your size preference.

If you're looking for a medium, large, or giant breed with a medium or high risk of assailment toward people and/or toward other dogs... a female is more likely to exist smaller and easier to handle.

Consider the other dogs in your household.

First, if your electric current domestic dog has a high adventure of aggression toward other dogs, I recommend that you stop right now.

I tin't tell you how many owners have chosen me after bringing home a female person Rottweiler when they already had a female Akita or Alaskan Malamute or American Bulldog. So I'm chosen in vi months subsequently because the ii females are at each other's throats and the household is in anarchy.

Are yous surprised that those two dogs are female, rather than male? Yes, males accept more of a reputation for fighting with each other, and yet many male-on-male fights are more posturing, shoving, skirmishing, and a few bites at each other. Whereas for their sheer ferocity, female-on-female battles are the worst of all. They tear viciously at each other, can be difficult to divide without getting bitten yourself, and they never forgive or forget.

It isn't fair to your electric current loftier-assailment dog to upset his or her world by bringing home an "invader." More importantly, it isn't off-white to a new dog to put him or her into a situation where fear, stress, or injury could hands occur. The moral is, continue a high-aggression dog every bit a single domestic dog.

If your current dog isn't really ambitious, but is a bit on the jealous or pushy side, brand sure your new canis familiaris is the opposite sexual activity AND a breed with a Depression risk of aggression (like a Lab or Gilded Retriever).

If your electric current canis familiaris is practiced with other dogs, make certain the new dog is a breed with a Depression (or maybe MEDIUM) risk of aggression. If it'south MEDIUM, go with the contrary sexual practice, to be safe. If it'southward Low, either sex should work.

Call back that when you mix the sexes, you either need to neuter ane of both dogs, or else y'all need to be very careful to keep the dogs apart when the female is in heat.

Consider other dogs in your neighborhood.

If your next-door neighbor has an aggressive dog, you may want to get the opposite sex to avert fence-fighting.

If an aggressive dog roams loose in your surface area, and you're unable to get its irresponsible possessor (or Animal Control) to stop it, again you might be wise to go a domestic dog of the reverse sexual practice, else your daily walks may become stressful.

Of course, Irish potato's Law says that if yous take great pains to do this, you might observe that on the mean solar day yous bring your puppy habitation, your neighbor's canis familiaris (or the slap-up who roams loose) will die and be replaced by a canis familiaris who is the same sex as yours!
